This week, we had the opportunity to talk with Kaja Koncilija, a wide receiver and free safety for the Domzale Tiger in Slovenia. She talked with us about her journey in flag football and where she sees the growth of the sport in the future!
My sister got me excited about flag football. She did a presentation on it in school, so shortly after that, I went to my first practice. I liked the sport and the team so I kept playing.
The team aspect. You learn how to communicate in groups and how to listen to others. It is hard to find a sport where you create that kind of bond as a team; A family to be honest. You cannot win as an individual; you need a whole team. Every player needs to know what she’s doing and what her job is.
I would say women’s flag football is on the rise. Perhaps in other large countries more so than here in Slovenia. If you look at our neighbors in Austria, where we play as well, they have a strong league, with competitive teams. But still, I think the popularity of women’s flag football has not hit itspeak yet, probably because of its connections with tackle football and prejudice.
I think it will grow even faster. Flag football itself is a sport that rises fast. If I go to the situation in Slovenia, there is a new team practically every year. Currently, we are only a women’s flag football team, but I think our results, approach and love for the game makes us great ambassadors for the sport. Hopefully, we can encourage the creation of more women’s teams and soon, like some of our neighbors, a strong and competitive domestic women’s flag football league.
Just do it! You have nothing to lose. This is a sport that everyone can practice no matter his or her physicality or knowledge of the sport. You can and will learn everything at practice. There are sports and positions for anybody!
