the HUDDLE

This week, we had the opportunity to chat with Myles Gibbon, who runs an online quarterback training program. This program is designed to offer aspiring and experienced quarterbacks quality training through the newest forms of technology and techniques. He gave us some great insight on how to be a great quarterback including key drills and exercises to improve your craft as well as general tips on how to be the best quarterback on the field!

Our spotlight contributor for the week is @theqbmovement!

What are the keys to being a great quarterback?

Leadership, competitiveness, the willingness to grind and learn when no one is watching. The list goes on, but it's about being responsible not only for yourself, but those around you.

What are some drills players can do to improve their ability to throw the football?

I tell guys to really put time watching themselves on tape or in the mirror. Learn or be taught proper fundamentals and then be able to self-assess. The little things make a big difference with throwing.

What are some drills specific to the quarterback position that players can do to improve their speed and agility, specifically for moving around the pocket or scrambling?

You gotta be able to move quickly and efficiently as a quarterback. The classic ladder and agility drills are great to get your feet moving and work on patterned foot strike, but it’s all about being able to move from static and active bases or positions. Check out my page for loads of different drills that involve movement.

What are some exercises or stretches you would recommend for quarterbacks?

When it comes to stretching, we focus a lot on hip mobility, shoulder and rotator cuff stretches and exercises. Get yourself a light resistance training band and use it to not only gain strength but also help in getting some extra stretch. For training, focus on the legs, glutes, groin and core over biceps and chest and shoulders if you’re trying to improve overall “arm” strength and control.

What are some tips you would give a player just starting at the quarterback position?

Watch everything. We are littered with information these days. Watch the good coaching and the bad coaching. There is always something to be taken from it. Find a good QB coach that you trust and respect. Even if they are far away, most offer online training these days. Learn to love the process, if it was easy everyone would do it. This position takes time and dedication, and a lot more than you think. Your physical is only the beginning and lots of guys can throw a ball. Mastering the mental is what separates the good ones from the greats.
